SEI High School Graduation Rates Better Than Statewide

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - High school graduation rates remain high at most in southeastern Indiana schools.

Milan, South Ripley, and Franklin County high schools had our five-county region’s highest graduation rates at better than 97 percent last year, according to graduation rate data released Wednesday by the Indiana Department of Education. Oldenburg Academy, a small private school, had 100 percent graduation among its 2018 graduating class of just 40 students.

The only area high school with graduation below 90 percent was Switzerland County High School, where only 83.8 percent of students graduated. Last year, better than 95 percent of students graduated in Vevay.

Statewide, Indiana’s waiver graduation rate last year was 88.1 percent, up from 87.2 percent in 2017.

“With the increase to Indiana’s graduation rate, it is evident our schools are committed to the academic success of our students,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. “While there is still work to be done, we will continue to partner with local districts to ensure every student graduates prepared for life beyond high school.”

But, disparities remain in various groupings of students. The graduation rate for black students is only 79.4 percent compared to 89.9 percent for white students and 95.5 percent for Asians. Students on free or reduced lunch programs graduated only 82.4 percent of the time, compared to 93.9 percent for students paying for lunch. 

Due to differences between federal and state accountability equations and standards, IDOE also released 2018 federal graduation rates. In 2018, Indiana’s federal graduation rate was 87.23 percent, and the federal non-waiver rate was 79.97 percent.
