Roundabout Planned For Kilby Road

(Harrison, Oh.) - A traffic solution more commonly found in Europe is being planned for an intersection in the Harrison area.

Roundabouts are becoming increasingly popular with transportation projects in the U.S. A roundabout is a type of circular intersection in which road traffic is slowed and flows almost continuously in one direction around a central island to several exits onto the various intersecting roads.

The Harrison Press reports that Hamilton County engineers are making plans for a roundabout intersection on Kilby Road at Simonson Road in Harrison Township.  The unique intersection would be part of a project to realign Campbell Road’s dangerous intersection with Kilby Road.

The cost of the realignment and intersection upgrade was estimated at between $1.5 and $2 million, according to the Press. Opting out of a four-way stop and instead using a roundabout solution would save up to $1 million.

Hamilton County engineers and Harrison Township Trustee President Tom Losekamp agreed to the Campbell Road rerouting and roundabout during a November 8 meeting, the newspaper reported. Funding for the project and a timeline are yet to be determined.
