Huerkamp is seeking a third term in Franklin County.

Chris Huerkamp.
(Brookville, Ind.) - Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Huerkamp has announced that he will be seeking his third term in office.
On January 7, Huerkamp will officially declare his bid for re-election by filing with the Indiana Election Division, as the Republican candidate for the primary election to be held on May 5.
Huerkamp was first elected in 2018, having defeated his Democrat opponent with just under 80 percent of the vote.
In total, he brings over 20 years of prosecutorial experience–starting from his final year of law school as an intern–with over 14 of those years spent in Franklin County. He was re-elected in 2022.
"It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Franklin County for the last 14 years. I have always aimed to approach my duties with a sense of integrity, justice, and decency, while exercising the authority of the office in a responsible and effective manner, ” said Huerkamp. “Early into my tenure here, a wise and seasoned law enforcement official gave me a great definition of leadership: doing the right thing, at the right time, the right way, and for the right reasons. That made quite an impression upon me, and I strive to live up to it.”
According to a press release, since Huerkamp first took office in 2019, crime in Franklin County has trended substantially downward by almost every measure. He has maintained fiscal responsibility and has consistently operated the office under budget. Despite the lack of large employers in the area, child support enforcement has met or exceeded statewide standards. In recent years, Huerkamp has overseen the expansion of his office’s victim services with additional attorney and support staff at no additional cost to local taxpayers.
Huerkamp has also implemented or partnered in initiatives devoted to strengthening the local criminal justice system, including but not limited to:
- Establishing Franklin County’s first Sexual Assault Response Team;
- Serving as Chairman of the local Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council;
- Serving as a member of the newly-created Community Corrections Board; and
- Assisting the Court’s entry and participation in the Southeast Indiana Veterans Treatment Court, where defendants with a military background can receive specialized attention in appropriate cases.
