(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – In June, smokers may be taking their final puffs from cigarettes as they dine in Indiana restaurants.
Friday, June 1 marks one month to go before Indiana’s new statewide smoking ban law goes into effect.
House Enrolled Act 1149 was passed by the state legislature and signed by the Governor Mitch Daniels earlier this year. It goes into effect Sunday, July 1.

The law prohibits smoking in most public workplaces. There are exemptions for bars that only allow patrons over age 21, casinos, fraternal clubs, and cigar bars. Smoking will also be prohibited within eight feet of a public entrance.
According to the Indiana Tobacco and Alcohol Commission, businesses will be required to post signs at all public entrances stating “State law prohibits smoking within eight feet of this entrance.” Signs are available online at www.in.gov/atc.
County health departments and Indiana Excise Police will be tasked with enforcing the ban.
