New Kentucky License Plates Could Be Flat

(Frankfort, Ky.) - Your next Kentucky license plate could be flat. Kentucky Department of Vehicle Regulation Commissioner John-Mark Hack told lawmakers Tuesday that the state could save $320,000 each year by switching to flat, plastic plates, The Lexington Herald-Leader reports. Currently, Kentucky uses embossed metal plates with raised letters and numbers. They are stamped by inmates at the Kentucky state prison in La Grange. Hack said the switch is possible as part of a modernization of Kentucky's licenses plates due in 2019. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet can implement the plate change without any change to state law, Hack said. The last time the state plate was changed was 2005. Kentucky licenses four million vehicles.
