(Hamilton County, Oh.) – On Wednesday, a Hamilton County, Ohio grand jury indicted Mohammed Mondal on Murder and Assault charges.

The charges stem from the shooting death of his wife, Staci Mondal, on November 6, 2023.

Charges were originally filed in Dearborn County.

Over the course of the investigation, detectives learned that Mondal, his wife, and their two youngest children were on their way to a photography appointment in Colerain when the alleged shooting took place in their car near the Indiana / Ohio state line.

Mondal originally contacted a neighbor who is a Sergeant with the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office and reported that he accidentally shot his wife. Shortly after, Mondal allegedly changed his story and said he shot his wife in self-defense.

A jury trial was set to begin on November 12 in Dearborn Circuit Court. However, in mid-October, the Dearborn County Prosecutor’s Office learned that the evidence indicates that both the shooting and death of Stacy Mondal most likely occurred in Ohio.

“As my office was preparing for the approaching trial, the medical evidence concerning the time of death of Stacy Mondal began to shift,” said Prosecutor Lynn Deddens. “The state’s medical expert had previously stated that time of death was best fixed when Stacy Mondal was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lawrenceburg, which occurred shortly after noon on November 6.”

However, defense counsel identified an expert on October 24, 2024, who shortly thereafter stated that death occurred within seconds of one of the shots which struck Staci Mondal. Court documents show she was struck with at least six bullets.

The medical examiner went on to report that Staci Mondal may have lived for up to five minutes after sustaining her wounds.

Deddens continued by saying “the time of death is critical because a required element of any criminal offense is jurisdiction.”

“Although I, and others in my office, along with the Sheriff’s Department had devoted, collectively, hundreds of hours to prepare for the case; and, although we had spent substantial sums of money to secure evidence and expert testimony in this matter, once I was confronted with these facts, it was my duty to provide all our materials to the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office to ensure that justice will be done in this matter.”

Mondal will be handed over to Ohio authorities as of today. He is indicted on one count of Murder and three counts of Felonious Assault for the killing of Staci Mondal in the presence of her children.
