Miller Township Board Votes To Adopt Cumulative Fire Fund

The fire fund could help pay for new fire engines or equipment for Bright and Miller-York fire departments.

(Miller Township, Ind.) – Taxpayers in Miller Township are being notified of the adoption of a Cumulative Fire Fund.

The Miller Township Board voted on June 25 to adopt the new Cumulative Fire Fund that could help pay for new fire engines or equipment for Bright and Miller-York fire departments.

The new fire fund tax can be levied at up to 3.33-cents per $100 of assessed valuation of a property within the taxing unit beginning in 2020 and payable in 2021.

For example, a property tax bill would increase by $33 per year on a home assessed at $100,000. For a $200,000 home, there would be about $67 in new taxes.

The public notice sent to Eagle Country on Tuesday (dated June 25) shows that 10 or more taxpayers in the taxing unit who will be affected by the tax rate and corresponding levy may file a petition with the Dearborn County Auditor no later than noon, 30 days after the publication of the notice.

Upon the filing of the petition, the county Auditor shall immediately certify the same to the Department of Local Government Finance, at which point the Department will fix a date for and conduct a public hearing on the proposed cumulative fund before issuing its approval, disapproval, or modification thereof.

The Miller Township Board has been trying to establish the fund for a year after the Department of Local Government Finance denied their request in April 2019 due to a failure to adequately advertise the original hearing.
