(Madison, Ind.) - The votes are in, and Madison, Indiana continues to rank among the very best small towns in the Midwest, earning the #2 spot in USA Today’s 2026 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
Following two consecutive years at #1, this marks Madison’s third straight year at the top of the rankings, a testament to the community’s enduring appeal and visitor experience. “We’re proud to continue this incredible run,” said Andrew Forrester VMI Executive Tourism Director, “To be recognized year after year speaks to the authenticity, energy, and hospitality that define Madison.”
Madison also congratulates neighboring Vevay, Indiana, on earning the #1 ranking this year, highlighting the strength and charm of communities along the Ohio River.
As the warmer season begins, Madison is welcoming visitors with a full lineup of experiences and events. The biennial Madison in Bloom Garden Tour returns, featuring a special patriotic-themed tour for 2026 as part of the America 250 celebration, hosted by Madison’s John Paul Chapter DAR and culminating in a Flag Day ceremony following the tour.
As the Madison Trolley Line approaches its one-year anniversary, the experience continues to grow as a signature way to explore the city and beyond. The Madison Trolley Line offers regular guided tours, providing a unique and engaging way to discover Madison’s rich history and scenic riverfront, every Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.
This season marks the return of free trolley loop experiences, including Summer Sundays loop and Fourth Friday evening loops, both running from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. These free, hop-on/hop-off routes are available to both locals and visitors, offering an easy way to explore Downtown Madison at no cost.
Meanwhile, Clifty Days, returning April 19, shift to a Sunday schedule with quarterly guided opportunities to explore Clifty Falls State Park.
In addition to regular tours, several special trolley experiences are on the horizon. Guests can enjoy “The Pour Tour” on April 25, a daytime excursion to two Kentucky distilleries, or take part in the rescheduled “Night at the Museums” on Friday, May 22, an immersive, progressive evening of history, art, and discovery.

Seasonal history experiences are also underway at Historic Madison, Inc. (HMI), with tours reopening at several of its notable properties, including the Shrewsbury-Windle House, Saddletree Factory, and more. Visitors can also enjoy the History & Art Center, now open for the season.
