Lawrenceburg Fall Music Fest Veteran's Recognition to Feature Five Heroes

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Five Veterans will be honored at Lawrenceburg Fall Music Fest. 

The annual Veterans Recognition and Awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, September 20 at 6:15 p.m. on the Civic Park stage. The National Anthem and Mayor’s Welcome will take place prior, starting at 6:00.

This year's honorees are Fred Clem Baum, Mike Phillips, Daniel Tinsley, Shane Brosey, and Gene Scholl. 

Bio's for each honoree can be read below. 

Fred Clem Baum

Fred was born on June 5, 1944, which was the day before D-Day, to Fred & Lucille (Hawk) Baum. He had three brothers: Jerry, Tim and Mike. Fred attended grade school at Hooven, OH and graduated from Harrison High School in 1962. He attended the University of Cincinnati (UC) for two years. He was inducted into the United States Army on April 10, 1969 and took basic training at Ft. Dix, New Jersey and remained there for AIT. He deployed to Vietnam after training and was assigned to the 1st Cavalry at Tay Ninh as part of the 25th Infantry Division. He also spent three months in the Central Highlands. Fred was wounded by enemy fire and awarded the Purple Heart. He was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star with “V” for Valor, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge (CIB), Army Good Conduct Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm, Expert Badge for the M-16, Sharpshooter Badge for the M-14 and two overseas bars. When he returned to the USA he was assigned to Ft. Benning, Georgia until his discharge on April 9, 1971 as a Specialist 4 (Spec 4, E-4). He served there with Co. B, 1st Battalion, 58th Infantry, 197th Infantry Brigade. Fred married Sharon Riley, his high school sweetheart, on March 13, 1965 and she was the love of his life. They enjoyed over 60 happy and wonderful years of marriage until her recent passing on July 30, 2025. Sharon’s dad, Thomas Melvin Riley, was a Prisoner of War in World War II and Purple Heart Recipient. Fred and Sharon have one daughter, Loralee, and she is married to Terry Walton. There is one grandson, Logan Strong. Fred worked at Cincinnati Incorporated for 42 years. He is a life member of the Southeastern Indiana Vietnam Veterans of America, Lary D. Fogle Chapter 71; the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Harrison VFW. Fred is proud of his service to our great nation and please remember those 58,324 names on the WALL in Washington, DC who gave their lives for us during the Vietnam War.

Mike Phillips

Mike Phillips was born on January 25, 1980 to Tom & Lisa Phillips in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has two brothers, Nick & Jeremy. Mike attended St. Charles Elementary in Carthage and Lawrenceburg High School in Lawrenceburg, Indiana with the Class of 1999. He was inducted into the United States Marine Corps on April 8, 2001 and was sent to Parris Island, South Carolina for Boot Camp. He then went to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to train to become a Combat Engineer. He deployed to Iraq and served with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, Company C, 3rd Platoon. He attained the rank of Corporal (E-4) and was wounded by an IED explosion and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered by enemy forces. He was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and a Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps on April 8, 2005. He was married to Megan Mastropaolo and they had two children: Madalynn Phillips and Mikey Phillips. Mike works for Brothers Express as a dispatcher in Cincinnati. Mike is proud of his service in the USMC and still supports our troops serving around the world today.

Daniel Tinsley

Daniel “Tinman” Tinsley was born on June 11, 1985 in San Diego, California to Dan and Pam Tinsley. He has one brother, Dustin. He attended grade school at Herman Elementary School in Herman, Wisconsin. He graduated from Mayville High School in Wisconsin in 2003. Tinman entered the United States Army on Oct. 19 2004 and took basic training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He continued with his AIT in artillery at Ft. Sill. He then went to Ft. Benning, Georgia for Airborne “Jump School”. He went to Ft. Richardson, Alaska and served with the 1/501st Airborne with the 25th Infantry Division. He was sent to Jurf-Al-Sakhar, Iraq for 16 months where he was wounded by enemy fire on Dec. 20, 2006. He was serving in a very bad and hostile area of Iraq known as the Triangle of Death. They had 900 in their battalion and eventually had 58 men killed in action. This was with 4/25th Infantry’s Light Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Dan was awarded the Purple Heart, two Army Commendation Medals with “V” for Valor, National Defense Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, Global War on Terroriam Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Badge and Expert Rifle Badge. He served 4 years, 9 months and 7 days before being medically discharged. He was a Sergeant (E-5). Dan married his wife, Kim, on September 14, 2024. She is also an Army Veteran. There are three children: Travis, Riley and Bailey. Dan works as a Regional Lead at Builder Backed, an in home building service. He is a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Military Order of the Purple Heart and Lawrenceburg American Legion Post 239. With Dan & Kim both being Veterans and great American Patriots, they are proud to have served our great nation.

Shane Brosey

Shane was born on October 10, 1973 in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was raised by his mom, Carolyh Kirchner, and step-dad, William Kirchner. He has one sister, Chrisie. He attended schools in Henderson, KY; Newburgh, IN; Duquoin, IL and Gillette, Wyoming due to his step-dad working in the coal mining industry. He attended high school in Gillette and graduated from Sullivan, IN High School in 1992. He attended Vincennes University from 1992-94. Shane entered the United States Air Force in December of 1994 and went to Lackland Air Force Base, Texas and then went to Wichita Falls, TX to Sheppard Air Force Base. He also served at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona and Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. He served one year at Kunsan Air Force Base in Korea with a one month TDY to Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. Kevin was sent to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia’s Dhahran Air Base also known as King Abdulaziz Air Base. While he was there the terrible Khobar Towers bombing incident happened and there were about 3000 personnel living there with the 4404th Air Wing. The bombing took place on June 25, 1996 and 19 were killed and 498 wounded. Shane was wounded during the explosion when hit by glass, metal, concrete, etc. Building 131 was an eight story building housing Air Force personnel. Shane was honorably discharged in December of 1998, He was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Short Tour Overseas Medal, Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon and Southwest Asia Service Medal. Shane married his wife, Nichol (Nicky), on July 22, 1995 and they have two children, Emily and Tyler, along with granddaughter, Ember. Shane has worked for Emery Worldwide Airlines and Executive Jet Management Cincinnati. He is a member of the Milan American Legion Post 235. Shane is proud of his service in the Air Force and stll is saddened by the loss of so many he served with.

Gene Scholl

Gene was born on March 6, 1950 in Milan, Indiana to Herman and Aileen Scholl. He had one brother, Myron “Bud” and three sisters; Marilyn, Carolyn and Donna. He attended Five Points Elementary School, Brookville Elementary and graduated from Brookville High School in 1968. He received further education online from Sinclair College. Gene entered the United States Army in June of 1968 and was honorably discharged in June of 1970. He took basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia and then went to Ft. McClellan, Alabama and back to Ft. Benning for Non Commisioned Officers School where he was promoted to Sergeant (E-5). He deployed to Vietnam in 1969 and was stationed at Chu Lai with the Americal Division at LZ Stetson. He was wounded here by enemy fire when a booby trap grenade was detonated and he was struck by shrapnel. He received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Expert Badge for the M-16. In 1970, he married his wife, Virginia Faye Evans and they have three daughters; Becki, Amanda and Katie. There are three grandchildren; Savannah, Marcus & Oliver. He worked at D&M in Connersville and then went to work for the Post Office for 41 years. He was at the Cincinnati Bulk Center for most of that but served as Interim Post Master at Milan, Dillsboro and Moores Hill. He is a member of Brookville American Legion Post 77, VFW Post 214, DAV Post 90, Purple Heart Chapter 1916 and Life Member of the Southeastern Indiana Vietnam Veterans of America, Lary D. Fogle Chapter 71. Gene is proud of his faithful and dedicated service to our great nation
