Lawmaker Proposes Ky. Casino Bill

(Frankfort, Ky.) - A northern Kentucky state lawmaker is proposing a law that that could potentially bring up to four casinos to the region.

State Rep.Dennis Keene (D-Wilder) has pre-filed a bill that would allow voters in counties with more than 90,000 residents to vote on casino gaming.

If Kenne’s bill becomes law, it would only apply in eight counties across the state. Boone County could potentially have two casinos, one at Turfway Park in Florence and another in unincorporated Boone County.

Horse tracks which are approved to host expanded gaming would be required to pay a $50 million initial licensing fee. Tracks which choose to offer full casino gambling would pay a $6 million annual renewal fee. Those that offer slots would pay a $25,000 annual renewal fee, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The Kentucky Lottery Corporation would be responsible for licensing and regulating the state’s casinos.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear said during his inauguration last week a casino gaming amendment to the commonwealth’s constitution would be among his priorities.
