Indiana DNR: Free Hunting and Fishing Opportunities Coming Up

Free Youth Hunting Days are less than a week away, while the final Free Fishing Day comes later this month.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites Hoosiers to participate in the first Free Youth Hunting Days of 2026 on September 5–6 and the last Free Fishing Day of the year on September 26.

Free Youth Hunting Days allow Indiana residents 17 or younger to hunt any legal game in season without a hunting license. After September 5-6, the final Free Youth Hunting Days of 2026 will be November 28-29.

"Free Youth Hunting dates in September provide opportunities for young hunters to target introductory small game species like squirrels and doves under the guidance of trusted mentors,” said Branndon Castellano, Indiana DNR’s hunting and shooting sports coordinator. “Free Youth Hunting dates in late November then offer mentors the chance to expose young hunters to more challenging pursuits like deer, quail, and waterfowl."

To ensure a safe and positive learning experience, youth participating must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years old. The adult must possess a valid hunting license unless they are exempt under regular season guidelines. They must remain close enough to the youth hunter to provide ongoing monitoring and communication and may assist with calling game, but they may not harvest game or carry a crossbow, bow and arrow, or firearm, except for a handgun carried lawfully.

Indiana DNR also encourages residents to take advantage of the final Free Fishing Day of the year on September 26. Offered three times annually, this day allows all Indiana residents to fish in public waters without a fishing license or trout/salmon stamp.

“Free Fishing Days are a great way to experience the benefits of fishing, either by yourself or with family and friends, without having to purchase a license,” said Eric Helton, Indiana DNR’s fishing coordinator. “DNR stocks fish in urban locations, such as city parks, throughout the state, making fishing access readily available.”
