INDIANAPOLIS - A bill that would ensure greater accessibility at school extracurricular activities or events has passed a major hurdle.
House Bill 1064 passed the House this week.
The legislation would require a cash payment option to be available at school athletic events and other extracurricular activities where an admission fee is charged starting in July 1 of this year.
The bill aims to remove barriers for individuals who prefer or need to pay with cash instead of digital methods, particularly in rural areas where access to electronic payment systems may be limited.
"I'm pleased to see strong support for this crucial legislation that keeps school events accessible to all families," State Rep. and bill author Cory Criswell said. "Not everyone relies on digital payments, and ensuring a cash option means no one is turned away from supporting their students."
Additionally, Criswell said the legislation would further empower parental choice by removing restrictive language from Indiana Code on school athletic transfers. Under current regulations, transfers require approval from both the sending and receiving schools, as well as Indiana High School Athletic Association, and often involve lengthy and burdensome procedures, including committee or court appearances.
This provision in the bill is in line with expected new transfer policies from the IHSAA.
House Bill 1064 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
