(Greensburg, Ind.) - A Greensburg man accused of killing his girlfriend's 12-year-old son has pleaded guilty to murder.
Police say Waldo "Lynn" Jones Jr. and Tasha Parsons beat Devin Parsons to death in their Greensburg home after he allegedly hid the prescription painkiller Percocet from them on June 3, 2011. The horrific assault spanned 12 hours, prosecutors said.
Parsons pleaded guilty in July and was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
With his plea agreement accepted in Decatur Superior Court Thursday, Jones could be sentenced to as many as 65 years. Sentencing has been scheduled for December 12.
Devin’s aunt, Jennie Parsons, told The Greensburg Daily News that Jones should have received more than 65 years because the child’s life was taken away.
“At least he’s put away,” she told the newspaper. “They got what they deserved — both of them.”
The plea agreement between Jones and prosecutors will result in the dismissal of a Neglect of a Dependant charge. Prosecutors also agreed to no seek a life in prison without parole sentence.
Earlier this year, The Indianapolis Star reported that the Indiana Department of Child Services had received at least 19 reports of abuse or neglect concerning Devin Parsons and his siblings. The department said two reports of abuse could not be substantiated.
