(Gallatin County, Ky.) - After months of working with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office has received a grant to address safety improvements on county roadways.
The grant will allow the sheriff's office to obtain additional radar equipment and intoximeters and allow staff to be expertly trained at no cost to the county.
One of the most common complaints the sheriff's office receives is about the perceived speeding motorists throughout the county.
"While we have deputies on patrol it is often times impossible for them to stay dedicated to traffic enforcement while taking calls for service. For 2024, Gallatin County ranked 23rd out of 120 counties in the state for commercial vehicle collisions. These problems have been identified but funding always remains an issue on how to bring a solution to this issue."
The grant funding will be used to dedicate units to enforcing traffic laws on state highways that run within the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office jurisdiction. The grant will pay overtime and benefits to deputies that perform these duties.
The grant period runs until September 30, 2026. Emphasis will be put on distracted driving, seat belt usage, driving under the influence, and speed enforcement.
