East Central HS Names Seven To Athletic Hall Of Fame Class Of 2017

By Travis Thayer (St. Leon, Ind.) – The East Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame is set to welcome seven new members. The school announced its Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2017 on Friday. This year’s inductees are Donna (Bruns) Kelly, Harry Wilson, Josh Martini, Don Callan, Kim Simonson, John Roth and Dave Deddens. The seven individuals will be inducted to the EC Athletic Hall of Fame during a special banquet ceremony on Friday, May 19. Bio’s for each member of the Class of 2017 are listed below, as provided by the EC Athletic Department:   Donna (Bruns) Kelly – East Central 1986, 12 Varsity Letters; 4 – Volleyball, 4 – Basketball, and 4 – Track & Field. 3-time EIAC Volleyball MVP and 4-year starter in basketball and track & field. Also, involved with Band/Pep Band, Band Council, French Club, Social Studies Club and boys basketball stat keeper. Played Division I volleyball at the University of Louisville, Team Captain and third in career digs. Harry Wilson – North Dearborn 1969, 11 Varsity Letters, 4 – Cross Country, 3 – Basketball, and 4 – Track & Field. Cross-Country was 3-time County & Conference Champion, Track & Field was a 4-time County & Conference Champion and 4-time Sectional, Regional and State Qualifier in the 2-mile run. Set school record and finished 6th at state. Also, a member of basketball sectional championship team. Josh Martini – East Central 1995, Indiana Mr. Football – 1994, EIAC All-Conference MVP – 1993 & 1994, Indiana South All-Star Team – 1994, Football State Runner-Up – 1993, Football State Champion – 1994. Holds numerous football records for rushing. Don Callan – Bright 1951, 4 years of basketball and 4 years of softball. Head coach at Cedarville University for 35 years and had 578 career victories. Athletic Director from 1961 to 1998 and Hall of Fame member; Cedarville University, NAIA, NCAA and Taylor University. Cedarville Athletic Center was renamed the Callan Athletic Center. Kim Simonson – North Dearborn 1968, 15 Varsity Letters, 4 – Football, 3 – Basketball, 4 – Baseball and 4 – Track & Field. Earned leading hitter for baseball, most valuable running back for football, leading rebounder for basketball and sectional champion in shot put. After high school was drafted in the United States Army for two years. Attended Cumberland College and was starting centerfielder for the NAIA Conference Champions. Coached for 27 years serving as Head Coach for boys basketball, football, boys track & field, girls basketball, girls track & field and cross-country. Served as Franklin County’s Athletic Director for five years and Principal for 6 years. John Roth – East Central Coach, Head Softball Coach (2001-2010) 252 wins and 24 losses, EIAC record 99 wins and 1 loss; 10-time EIAC Champs, 4-time ICGSA Coach of the Year, Assistant softball coach (1990-2000) 240 wins and 47 losses, 10 EIAC Championships. Assistant Football Coach for 29 years. Defensive Coordinator for 22 years, 11 EIAC Championships, 10 Sectional Championships, 6 Regional Championships, 2 Semi-State Championships and 1 State Championship. Dave Deddens – East Central 1986; Contributor to Athletics. East Central Band Member for 4 years. Drum Corps Captain. Previous owner of 3-D Mart, Blimpie, BP, and Exxon. Current owner and operator of St. Leon Skyline Chili. Serves on Dearborn County Redevelopment Committee, Dearborn Community Foundation Board Development and Finance.
