Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign Aims to Deter Impaired Driving

Motorists may notice increased patrols starting August 19 through Labor Day weekend.

(Undated) - Travelers are reminded to plan ahead for a safe and sober ride home to help keep roads safe over the upcoming Labor Day weekend. 

The national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign runs August 19 through September 7. During this time, motorists will notice increased patrols, sobriety checkpoints, and public awareness efforts

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one person is killed about every 42 minutes in a drunk-driving crash, totaling more than 12,000 lives lost each year.

There were 505 traffic crash fatalities nationwide during Labor Day Weekend 2024. Of those crashes, 170 (34%) involved an alcohol-impaired driver with a BAC ≥0.08.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear released the following statement: 

"This Labor Day, let’s all do what’s right and look out for our neighbors by making smart decisions that keep everyone safe on the roadway,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “Do not drink and drive, put the phone down, buckle up and drive the speed limit. Too many crashes and tragedies on our roadways can be prevented by taking simple steps that ensure everyone makes it home safely."

• Before drinking, plan a safe and sober ride home.
• Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if they've been drinking.
• If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home.
• If you see an impaired driver, call 911. And always wear your seat belt — it’s your best defense against impaired drivers.
