City Councilman: Don't Trash The Skate Park

One member of Lawrenceburg Common Council has suggested shutting down the city's free skate park if users don't clean up their act.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Lawrenceburg officials are hoping users of the city’s free skate park get the message about littering after a city councilman suggested shutting down the facility.

City councilman Paul Seymour, Jr. said he has seen skaters leaving trash laying out too frequently.

“I’d like to shut it down for a while. I’d like to fence it in and let them know, what they have, how much money they spent on it, and if they want to skate on it again I want coming in here and answering to us and I want them explaining to me how come I have to pay taxpayer dollars to clean up garbage can after garbage can of trash every night of the week,” Seymour lamented.

Seymour says he himself has taken time to clean up the improperly discarded trash.

There are trash cans stationed around the park.

Fellow councilman Tony Abbott suggested it would be unfair to shut down the skate park to all when it is only a few causing the problem. He said if the park is closed, the problem would only shift to another area of the city. Aaron Cook echoed Abbott’s feelings.

Mayor Kelly Mollaun said any kids caught littering should be made an example of in order to deter others from doing it.

“You send a message that the park is free, but you have to do your part,” Mollaun said.

Assistant Police Chief David Schneider represented the Lawrenceburg Police Department at the meeting. He said he will ask officers to more frequently patrol the skate park.
