Aurora Fire Dept. Fish Fry Today Benefits Twins' Family

By Mike Perleberg (Aurora, Ind.) – A difficult week of action for the Aurora Fire Department will end with an opportunity for the department and community to come together. Each year on the second to last Friday during Lent, most other fish dinners in town take the week off to allow the department to hold its Lenten fish fry. The dinner is happening today, April 11, from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the department located at 5950 Dutch Hollow Road, just off U.S. 50. In addition to raising funds for new equipment and other expenses, fire chief Jeff Lane says the department will donate $1,000 of the dinner proceeds to the Spurlock family, whose twin two-year-old daughters drowned in a swimming pool Tuesday evening. “Anybody that wants to help out a little more, they are welcome to help out there,” says Lane. “It’s been a tragic week for the Spurlock family, for the Aurora Fire Department, for the life squad and everybody who was involved in the incident.” There will also be an appearance by the Hamilton County (Ohio) Sheriff’s Office helicopter. The Aurora Fire Department fish dinner menu includes fried or baked cod, green beans, macaroni & cheese, corn, cole slaw, applesauce, fruit cocktail, desserts, and drinks. The cost of the all-you-can-eat dinner is $10 for adults. Children 12 and under just $5. Hot dogs are available for kids who don’t like fish. Carry-out and delivery are available by calling (812) 926-1122. A carry-out meal for $8 includes fish sandwich, baked beans, cole slaw, chips, and dessert. It was Aurora firefighters and EMTs who tried to revive the Spurlock twins, Jocelyn and Shaylyn, who snuck out of their home and were discovered in a neighbor's pool Tuesday, April 8. Days earlier on April 2, the department was part of the search for Peggy Dean, 57, who suffered from dementia and may have been confused when she fell into a pond and drowned.
