(St. Leon, Ind.) – There is a changing of the guard happening at East Central High School.

Longtime boys varsity basketball head coach David Disbro will not return for the 2023-24 season after 24 seasons of leading the program.

During that time, Coach Disbro (332-220) led the Trojans to 18 winning seasons, including a sectional championship in 2008.

East Central went 7-16 this past season.

Taking over for Disbro is a familiar face. Tyler Theising, a 2009 graduate of East Central, returns to head coaching after serving as an assistant coach under Disbro last season.

"It is an honor to be named the head basketball coach at East Central. I’m looking forward to what the future brings. It’s a little different feeling. I was pretty excited about my first gig at South Ripley and I enjoyed my time there for the four years, but being named the varsity head coach at the place I grew up at and graduated at. It’s a different feeling and I’m excited about,” said Theising.

He admitted there are big shoes to fill as he replaces a man that coached him during his four years as a student-athlete at East Central.

“I have a ton of respect for Coach Disbro. I consider him my mentor. He coached me for four years as a high school player. I’ve contacted him countless times about advice. I would say just trying to live up to what he has established here in almost a quarter of a century. He has established a lot of greatness within the program. The challenge is hoping that I can be as successful as Coach Disbro. He has over 300 wins and I hope to be able to accomplish something like that.”

Theising has made previous coaching stops at Shelbyville, Milan, and South Ripley. At the latter, he led the Raiders to a 58-36 record over four seasons between 2018 and 2021.
