(Milan, IN) Kayla Roell became the first high school girl's wrestler to win the IHSAA Girls Wrestling State Championship in the 120-pound weight class. Roell a junior at the time defeated Aaliyah McLean (McCutcheon). She finished her junior year with a record of 36-1.
Roell's senior year she defeated Abi Lemon in the first round of the state tournament. She would be defeated in the quarterfinals by #3 Maya Hammond. The finals score was 10-7. She would go on to win the 7th place match by fall (4:20) over Papadakis.
Last month Kayla committed to continue her wrestling and academic career at University of Cumberland. Kayla plans to pursue a career in nursing.
In a post from Milan Community Schools on Facebook it reads, "Kayla has excelled both on the mat and in the classroom, earning this opportunity through her dedication, discipline, and drive. We’re proud of her accomplishments and excited for all that lies ahead."
