Duck Throw Fundraiser Will Support EKG Screenings at South Dearborn

Senior Kiersten Dixon, who suffered sudden cardiac arrest in 2022, is spearheading the effort.

(Aurora, Ind.) – Funds will be raised for Giving Hearts a Hand on Saturday night at South Dearborn High School.

Senior Kiersten Dixon, family and friends will be hosting a duck throw at halftime of the boys varsity basketball game against Greensburg. Donations will also be accepted.

All proceeds will go to Giving Hearts a Hand to help pay for heart screenings for local middle and high school students.

Ducks will be $2 each or three for $5. The closest duck to the target will win a $25 Skyline gift card and swag from Drayer.

Dixon suffered sudden cardiac arrest on May 20, 2022.

She was saved by a retired Cincinnati fireman, his son, and Kiersten’s boyfriend, who performed CPR and gave her breaths until EMTs arrived.

Dixon would end up spending four days on a ventilator and a total of two weeks in the hospital. During her stay in the hospital, she had a defibrillator implanted after being diagnosed with Long QT syndrome.

A simple EKG could have caught her condition before she went into cardiac arrest.

After her release from the hospital, Dixon and her family made it their mission to help get heart screenings for students at South Dearborn. Two full days of screenings have already happened, checking 66 hearts.

On March 2, South Dearborn is partnering with MCORE to facilitate more preventative cardiac screenings.

The screenings are available to students ages 12 and over for a fee of $15. Appointments will take place during the school day and parents are not required to be present.
