(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Lawrenceburg Mayor Kelly Mollaun gave his annual State of the City address on Friday afternoon at the Liberty Theater.

Mayor Mollaun, who is in the final two years of his third and final term, spoke for a little over 20 minutes.

Like past speeches, Mayor Mollaun focused on the three key priorities that have remained unchanged during his time in office: economic development, education, and quality of life.

Economic Development

“How many vacant store fronts do you see in our downtown or along U.S. 50? The answer is, very few,” said Mayor Mollaun. “In fact, we receive calls daily from individuals and businesses interested in opening or relocating here.”

Aside from attracting businesses to Lawrenceburg, the city has made several sustainable investments during Mayor Mollaun’s time in office.

Some of those investments made over the past decade include the Planet Fitness strip mall, Whiskey River Apartments, Lawrenceburg Event Center and hotel, Ivy Tech Community College, upcoming senior housing, Liberty Theater, and numerous downtown and U.S. 50 businesses.

“When you look at the full picture, I believe Lawrenceburg has made strong, strategic progress in the area of economic development,” said Mayor Mollaun.

Education

“Whenever a request comes before city council to support or address a need for our students or for the Lawrenceburg Community School Corporation or Ivy Tech, our administration has consistently been willing to help,” said Mayor Mollaun.

The city continues to support scholarship opportunities through Community Foundation and many students are earning college credits while still in high school.

This year, the Lawrenceburg Police Department partnered with Lawrenceburg Schools and the Greendale Redevelopment Commission to fund school resource officers, but also to ensure all SROs are fully trained police officers upon completion of the Indiana Police Academy.

Another vital component of education in the community is Ivy Tech Community College. Several years ago, an adult scholarship program was created in partnership with the city to help adults obtain a degree.

Quality of Life

Mayor Mollaun had a laundry list of things that contribute to quality of life in Lawrenceburg, including:

  • Free events
  • Clean, safe trail
  • Updated, clean parks
  • Free pool usage for city residents
  • Safe environment
  • Grant opportunities
  • Free garbage service
  • Full-time Fire Department with paramedics

The mayor’s time on the Liberty Theater stage ended with a short Q&A session that was not included on the livestream below.

The first question was in regard to the previously proposed Riverwalk project. That project has been shelved.

A second question focused on the upcoming senior housing project at the Durbin Plaza. Mayor Mollaun was unable to give a timeline when that project will be finished, but he did offer that the site plan is being finished up. Once that is completed, a full project timeline will be released.

Another exciting development is the annual Community Picnic which will be coupled with America’s 250th celebration this spring. More details are expected to be released soon.

“The future of Lawrenceburg is bright. We remain in a strong financial position. I am excited about what lies ahead for our city. I am deeply grateful for everyone who has stood with me to truly make Lawrenceburg a city on the rise.”
