(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Hundreds of onlookers gathered around Lawrenceburg to watch the tallest structure in Dearborn County come tumbling down Wednesday morning. The 400-foot-tall concrete smokestack at the former Tanners Creek Power Plant site was toppled with a controlled explosion. After a loud burst of explosions, the tower fell in one piece, toward the Ohio River, where it caused a thunderous rumble as it met the ground. Power plant retirees, Lawrenceburg citizens, and folks who were just curious watched from the river levee and various locations along U.S. 50. The demolition was scheduled for 9:00 a.m., but the detonation didn’t happen until about 9:20. Lawrenceburg Fire Chief Johnnie Tremain said water hoses to be used for dust control following the implosion had to be thawed first. The morning’s temperature was in the upper 20s. Commercial Development Company, Inc. affiliate Tanners Creek Development, LLC is demolishing the old power plant to make way for a potential port on the Ohio River.
