Original story published Thursday April 2 at 8:25 a.m.: (Florence, Ky.) - An armed suspect was shot by a police officer in Florence early Thursday morning. Florence Police say two officers were on patrol when they encountered two suspicious looking men on La Cresta Drive around 1:30 a.m., said department spokesman Captain Tom Grau. Both of the men were reportedly armed with rifles. One of the men stopped and complied with police, but the other ran off. An officer caught up with the suspect after a short foot pursuit. The suspect allegedly picked up a rifle on the ground next to him. Despite multiple verbal commands from the officer, the suspect refused to put down the weapon. The policeman then opened fire, hitting the suspect in the leg. The suspect was taken to University of Cincinnati Hospital. The officers were not hurt. The policeman who fired the shots has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation as part of standard procedure. Names of those involved in the incident could be released later Thursday. Florence Police have experienced three officer-involved shootings since December. On December 2, 16-year-old Richard Lee Patton, Jr. died of a self-inflicted gunshot during a shootout with an officer investigating a marijuana complaint at the Super 8 motel on Dream Street. On February 19, a man firing a shotgun in the parking lot of another hotel on Dream Street was shot by officers.
