UPDATE: McCabe's Greenhouse Fire Forces Shop Closure; Family Business Still Taking Orders

Update posted at 3:53 p.m.: Having fire extinguishers handy may have helped keep McCabe’s Greenhouse and Floral in Lawrenceburg from burning to the ground Tuesday. The family-owned and operated plant shop on U.S. 50 was the scene of a fire that was discovered in the businesses’ ceiling around 10:42 a.m. It started near a heater suspended from an attic-mounted furnace. “At first they thought the fire was outside, then they realized it was inside. Becky (an employee) could hear it crackling in the roof,” says Beth Legge, store manager and daughter of owner Mike McCabe. Mike McCabe and employees fetched the extinguishers and went to work trying to prevent the flames from spreading. Another employee called 911. “He stayed there using the extinguishers until the firefighters came. This is his life here. He was going to try to get it out,” Legge says. Lawrenceburg Fire Chief Johnny Tremain says his department’s truck was the first on the scene. They evacuated the building and began tearing through the ceiling tiles and insulation to ensure the fire was completely out. No injuries were reported. Tremain estimated the fire caused damage ranging from $15,000 to $20,000. But for the McCabe’s, their livelihood was largely spared by a situation that could have been much worse. Legge says neighboring businesses helped the floral and plant business out a great deal following the fire. Shurlight provided space for employees to successfully finish assembling floral arrangements that had been ordered for funerals later Tuesday. Pizza Hut and Papa John’s Pizza provided lunch. McCabe’s shop will likely be closed for about a week, says Legge. However, the business is still able to take and fulfill floral orders by phone and deliver until then. They have electric in one greenhouse to run another heater. Tremain said the cause has been ruled accidental. He estimated about 30 firefighters from Lawrenceburg, Greendale, and Aurora were on the scene. Bright and Dillsboro fire departments assisted with covering Greendale and Aurora’s territory, respectively.   Update posted at 12:11 p.m.: McCabe’s Greenhouse & Floral has shared an update regarding the fire on their Facebook page: (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Post by McCabe's Greenhouse and Floral.   Original story posted at 11:27 a.m.: (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Firefighters are on the scene of a structure fire at McCabe's Greenhouse & Floral in Lawrenceburg Tuesday morning.
