“Uncle Jim’s” Fund Grants $586K In Ripley Co.

The Tyson Library in Versailles received a $132,000 grant from the Tyson Fund this month.

(Versailles, Ind.) - The Tyson Fund is giving again to Versailles and Ripley County.

The fund was set up by Versailles native and Walgreen’s drug store chain co-founder James H. Tyson. Each year, the fund created by "Uncle Jim" generates hundreds of thousands of dollars to be given to Ripley County causes in the form of grants.

The Versailles Republican newspaper reports that a total of $586,575.42 in grants were voted on and announced September 14. The amount is about $48,000 more than was distributed from the Tyson Fund in 2012.

The Town of Versailles received the largest chunk of the money: over $250,000 for various projects. The Tyson Library will receive $132,000. South Ripley Community Schools received $87,000 for creating a professional development program for teachers and staff.

Several other grants were also awarded, according to the newspaper:

-Tyson Community Advancement Foundation - $40,000 for renovations to the Tyson CAF Building.

-Versailles Fire Department - $30,000 to pay off fire trucks.

-Tyson Manor, Inc. - $10,000 for improvements and appliance replacements.

-Versailles Lions Club - $7,500 for Versailles Pumpkin Show entertainment and marketing.

-Ripley County Probation Department - $5,000 to support a substance abuse outpatient program.

-Ripley County Historical Society - $1,500 to purchase document scanner.

-Child Evangelism Fellowship - $4,040 to advance Good News Archery Clubs and provide scholarships for camp and other activities.
