(Aurora, IN) - South Dearborn Middle school hosted a truck and trade show in the bus lot for the students on Wednesday morning. Middle School students came out and checked out all the different occupations and got the chance to talk to employees or owners of these businesses.

Dearborn County Water Rescue, Dearborn County Sherrif, Aurora Fire Department, Aurora EMS, Ken Neyer Plumbing, Hogan Valley Fabrication, Baylor Trucking, McGraw Excavating, and more were in attendance for the event.

Talking with the Captain of Dearborn County Water Rescue Meghan Keith, she explained the importance of being there for the kids. Keith said it is important to get kids comfortable around water. She discussed with the students what to do if they find themselves in a bad situation. Keith told the students to be cool and collected to safely stay afloat. She also enjoyed showing them the fun stuff and some the cool equipment.

The Eagle Country 99.3 truck doesn’t have all the cool equipment on it like a fire truck, but talking with the kids about the ins and outs of their local radio station was rewarding. The students were a blast to talk to. One student told me they enjoyed seeing all the equipment from all the vehicles.

Not only do kids get to learn about different trades like plumbing, but if they find themselves in an unfortunate situation where they must be in the back of a life squad, they have seen it, talked to workers, and will feel more comfortable in those situations.

Talking with Sonya Gabbard who is a 7th and 8th grade STEM computer science teacher, she explained how this event gives students an opportunity to find work in their community even without needing a college degree. Her favorite part of the show was the community coming together to be there for the kids and show them all they have to offer.

The star of the show was Baylor Trucking with the horn.
