The Ohio Effect: Local Casino Revenues Decline

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - The effects of expanded casino gaming in Ohio are showing up in the latest revenue and attendance figures for southeast Indiana’s casinos.

According to the latest Indiana Gaming Commission monthly report, revenues at the three local riverboats was down 10 percent in November from the same month in 2011. Hollywood Casino, Rising Star Casino Resort, and Belterra Casino combined for $47.6 million in revenue last month.

Admissions at the three gaming facilities was also down by 19 percent in November when compared to last year.

Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg still dominates the local gambling market with $29 million in revenues reported last month. The figure accounted for nearly 61 percent of the local take. However, Hollywood did experience the largest decrease in attendance, 24 percent less than November 2011.

Switzerland County’s Belterra Casino, which announced $11 million in renovations and improvements on Tuesday, saw revenues rise four percent to $12.2 million. Attendance fell eight percent.

Rising Star Casino Resort in Rising Sun saw double-digit declines in attendance, 19 percent, and revenue, down 11 percent to $6.3 million.

The Ohio impact on southeast Indiana’s gaming market is likely to grow. The $400 million, 350,000 square foot Horseshoe Casino opens in Cincinnati next Spring.
