(Harrison, Oh.) - Voters in the Southwest Local School District have once again shot down a proposed tax levy.
After a $4 million levy failed in the spring, the school district asked voters to approve a 0.25 percent tax on earned income for individuals within the school district.
A majority of voters were against the tax. The final tally was 1,311 against (63%) and 754 in favor (37%)
The levy aimed to help offset a projected $3 million funding shortfall and prevent program and staff cuts.
Under House Bill 96, the state's biennial operating budget for fiscal year 2026-27 significantly reduces SLSD's state aid. SLSD ranks in the top 10 percent of Ohio's most financially efficient districts, spending approximately $12,955 per student. That is $765 below the state average.
The district warns that reduced funding will force costs cuts that could reduce class offerings and programs and will require bringing spending in line with revenues.
