Six Years Since Deadly Flight 5191

Larry Turner was among the 49 people killed in the plane crash.

 

(Lexington, Ky.) – Kentucky is remembering the victims Comair Flight 5191 crash which killed 49 people, including a Rising Sun, Indiana native.

 

Monday marked six years since the tragedy at the end of the runway at Bluegrass Airport in Lexington the morning of August 27, 2006.

 

Every person on the plane except one – co-pilot Jim Polehinke – died in the fiery crash. The investigation into the crash determined the pilots had inadvertently turned onto the wrong, too-short runway for takeoff.

 

Among the crash victims was Rising Sun native Dr. Larry Turner. After growing up in Ohio County, Turner joined the University of Kentucky in 1978. He eventually became UK’s Associate Dean for Extension and Director of Kentucky Cooperative Extension.

 

Turner was on Flight 5191 leaving for an extension conference in Puerto Rico.
