There are many stops to make along the way.

(Southeast Indiana) - For many people, coffee is simply a morning necessity. But in Southeast Indiana, it has become the centerpiece of a flavorful adventure that is drawing visitors to charming downtowns, historic communities, and some of the region’s most beloved local businesses.

The Southeast Indiana Coffee Trail is turning ordinary coffee runs into memorable road trips, giving residents and visitors alike a fun excuse to explore seven counties, discover hidden gems, and support local cafés along the way.

What started in 2023 as a regional tourism initiative has quickly grown into one of the area's most popular experiences. Originally launched through a partnership among tourism offices in Dearborn, Decatur, Franklin, Ripley, and Ohio counties, the Coffee Trail was designed to showcase local coffee culture while encouraging people to visit small towns throughout the region.

The concept is simple: pick up a passport or rack card at a participating coffee shop or visitor center, visit each stop along the trail, collect stamps, and earn prizes for completing the journey.

Think of it as a scavenger hunt fueled by caffeine and community spirit.

Since its launch, the trail has expanded significantly. Today, it spans seven counties and features more than 21 independently owned coffee shops. Coffee lovers can travel from Madison to Columbus, North Vernon to Batesville, discovering unique cafés and local personalities at every stop.

What makes the trail especially appealing is that no two coffee shops are alike.

One stop might serve a perfectly crafted Salted Shaken Maple Espresso, while another specializes in a Sweet Honey Cinnamon Latte. Visitors can sample everything from traditional house-brewed coffee and specialty teas to trendy favorites like Dirty Sodas and refreshing Mango Smoothies.

And the food options are just as tempting.

Hungry travelers may find themselves enjoying a Pecan Sticky Bun Latte alongside a homemade Cinnamon Roll, savoring a Strawberry Cheesecake Stuffed Croissant, or digging into a hearty Sausage Gravy Kolache. Other menu highlights found throughout the trail include BBQ Pulled Pork served on a Pretzel Bun, Ham and Brie on Grilled Ciabatta, Loaded Potato Soup, Cornbread Cookies with Honey Butter, and fresh Sourdough Avocado Toast.

The variety is part of the fun.

Every stop offers something different, encouraging visitors to slow down, stay awhile, and experience the unique flavor of each community. Many participating coffee shops are located in historic downtown districts, adding another layer to the adventure. Visitors can stroll through local shops, admire historic architecture, and discover attractions they may have otherwise driven right past. A simple coffee run often turns into an afternoon of exploration.

The rewards make the experience even sweeter.

Participants who complete the trail receive exclusive Southeast Indiana Coffee Trail merchandise, including a commemorative T-shirt. Early finishers may also receive bonus items such as insulated travel mugs, coffee sleeves, trucker hats, and coupons for participating businesses.

While the prizes are certainly a nice perk, many trail participants say the real reward is discovering places they never knew existed. That's exactly what organizers hoped would happen.

The Coffee Trail serves as more than a fun tourism promotion.

It helps support small businesses, strengthens local economies, and shines a spotlight on the entrepreneurs and Baristas who make Southeast Indiana's communities special. Every latte purchased and every passport stamp collected contributes to the success of locally owned cafés and the towns they call home.

The trail also encourages repeat visits.

Seasonal promotions and themed experiences, including summer-focused drink features, give coffee enthusiasts new reasons to hit the road and revisit favorite stops throughout the year.

Whether you're a dedicated coffee connoisseur, a weekend road-tripper, or someone simply looking for a new adventure close to home, the Southeast Indiana Coffee Trail offers a unique blend of exploration, flavor, and hometown charm.

So grab a passport, invite a friend, and start planning your route.

There are seven counties, 21 coffee shops, countless specialty drinks, and plenty of stories waiting to be discovered—one cup at a time. The Southeast Indiana Coffee Trail prize schedule is currently running through December 2026, making now the perfect time to begin your caffeinated journey.
