Ripley County Jail Escapee Receives Sentencing

By Travis Thayer Chris Rolfes. Photo by Ripley County Sheriff’s Office. (Versailles, Ind.) – An inmate who escaped from the Ripley County Jail has been sentenced. Chris Rolfes escaped from the jail in Versailles last November after he was placed in an unsecured area at which he fled on foot. Rolfes was housed in Ripley County Jail due to an unspecified conflict. He was captured later the same day after a motorist observed him walking on County Road 450 South. Ripley County Sheriff Jeff Cumberworth said jail policies and procedures were not followed when officers dealt with Rolfes, which resulted in the termination of a senior officer. After being taken back into custody, Rolfes was sent back to the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center for violating his probation on a forgery charge. Rolfes now finds himself with an extended stay behind bars due to an additional charge of Escape (Level 5 felony) in Ripley County. In May, Rolfes was sentenced in Ripley County Circuit Court to eight years behind bars with no time suspended to probation.
