NWS: Tornados Confirmed in Aurora, Franklin Co., Florence, Carroll Co.

(Wilmington, Oh.) - The National Weather Service in Wilmington has confirmed four tornados that touched down in the Eagle Country 99.3 listening area.

In Aurora, an EF2 tornado touched down on June 18 at 12:14 a.m. The tornado started in Dillsboro and ended in Rising Sun, traveling 8.9 miles at a width of 450 yards and an estimated peak wind of 130 mph. 

The first damage produced by the occurred on Texas Gas Road, where a large tree was uprooted and other smaller trees were downed. Farther east along Cole Lane, an attached garage was destroyed and a large tree was downed onto a house. In addition, a roof was lifted from another garage and several trees were snapped at their trunks.

The tornado strengthened and proceeded east near East Laughery Creek Road, where it completely destroyed a house and two outbuildings. Debris from these buildings was strewn east along the path of the tornado across a large field. T

he tornado continued toward Alta Vista Ave, where a large number of hardwood trees were snapped. The tornado then moved across Laughery Creek, producing significant tree damage along and near Laughery Creek and in wooded areas along Hartford Pike where numerous trees were snapped. Along Holmes Hill Road, more tree damage was observed along with the roof being lifted off an outbuilding. On Thuermer Hollow Road, more trees were damaged and a roof was lifted off a barn. Along State Road 56, additional roof damage from a barn and damage to large healthy trees was noted. Farther east on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, numerous trees were knocked down at a campground. 

Franklin County was also hit by an EF2 tornado. It spanned 5.2 miles at a width of 400 yards, reaching wind speeds of 125 mph. The tornado started in Cedar Grove and ended near West Harrison. 

The first evidence of tornado damage occurred along Seeley Road, where large tree limbs were knocked down. The tornado moved east, producing more tree damage along Johnson Fork Road. The tornado strengthened as it moved into Drewersburg, producing more significant tree damage along Welsh Drive and Drewersburg Road. One single family home along Welsh Road had its roof completely lifted off with collapse of some exterior walls. A roof was also lifted off a home on Drewersburg Road. The tornado curved southeast as it moved onto State Line Road, blowing some large tree limbs down. 

In northern Kentucky, an EF1 tornado was confirmed in Florence. The tornado started near Oakbrook and ended in Elsmere, traveling 6.2 miles. 

The first evidence of the tornado was found on Landings Way where several trees were snapped at their trunks. Farther east, along Oakbrook Road near Pleasant Valley Road, additional tree damage was found along with minor damage to building fascia. The tornado proceeded east through residential areas of Oakbrook near Sentry Drive and Thunder Ridge Drive where a few larger hardwood trees were snapped and minor roof damage was noted.

The tornado progressed east, uprooting trees and snapping tree trunks along Hopeful Road, Surfwood Drive, and Rosetta Drive. The tornado then crossed Interstates 71/75 where it lifted a portion of the roof of one commercial building and caused additional roof damage to a second building. A large power pole was snapped near the intersection of US-42 and Dream Street and a local business had its sign destroyed. This is where the tornado is estimated to have reached peak intensity, with winds around 100 MPH.

The tornado then continued east into additional residential areas from here. Large tree limbs were downed along Hollywood Drive and there were numerous trees and large branches down along Ann Street, Lee Street, and Julia Avenue. The home near Ann Street had a large tree fall onto it, causing minor roof damage. The tornado continued southeast, crossing into Kenton County, snapping several trees at residences along Autumn Road. The final known instance of tornadic damage was on Tallwood Circle, where multiple large branches were downed.

A tornado was also confirmed in Carroll County. Details are pending.
