(North Vernon, Ind.) – Police have arrested a 30-year-old North Vernon man accused of fatally shooting his father.

Around 10:00 p.m. Sunday, officers from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, North Vernon Police Department and Indiana State Police responded to an address in the 4000 block of East Private Road 450 South after receiving reports of shots being fired.

Upon arriving at the scene, a deceased male who had been shot, later identified as Robert Montgomery, 53, was located outside of the residence.

Inside the home was Conner Montgomery, who was taken into custody without incident.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Conner was at the residence with an adult female and two children when an altercation occurred where he allegedly pointed a gun at the woman and fired inside the home.

Conner allegedly fired another shot at the woman’s vehicle, disabling it as she was trying to leave. Before law enforcement was notified of the situation, Conner’s father was called to the residence. When he arrived, Conner allegedly shot him while he stood outside of the home.

Conner Montgomery was arrested on initial charges of murder, criminal confinement with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, domestic battery (in the presence of minors), neglect of a dependent, and pointing a firearm.

He is being held in the Jennings County Jail pending an initial appearance in court.
