NKU May Be Div. I In 2012

(Highland Heights, Ky.) – This time next year, Northern Kentucky University expects its athletic teams to be playing in Division I.

NKU President James Votruba told the Cincinnati Enquirer the school could receive an invitation to a DI conference by the end of 2011.  The school would then have to petition the NCAA for the jump.

A good possibility for a home for the Norse would be the Ohio Valley Conference. The Horizon League has also been rumored as a destination.

A move to DI will take NKU’s annual athletic budget from $4.2 million, to almost $8 million.

The school would have to add a 14th sport. That sport would not be football at a cost of another $5 million, but rather women’s track and field.

According to the report, NKU would not be eligible for postseason play for four years.
