Man Drowns In Water Cistern

(Guilford, Ind.) – A Guilford man’s drowning death in a water cistern is believed to be accidental.

Dearborn County Sheriff Mike Kreinhop says Joseph Weekly, 70, was found dead in the cistern at his home at 26484 Ennis Ridge Road Monday morning.

Weekly was reported missing by his wife, who had just returned home and could not find him. Firefighters with the St. Leon Volunteer Fire Department found Weekly and pulled him from the cistern.

The Dearborn County Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Weekly had crawled beneath his home’s porch to access the cistern and then fell in.

An autopsy has determined that Weekly died by drowning, Kreinhop said.
