(Switzerland County, Ind.) - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is announcing that beginning Monday, April 2, State Road 56 (S.R. 56) in Switzerland County will close.
S.R. 56 will be closed from the S.R. 56/156 intersection to S.R. 250 in East Enterprise. Work will take place on the south side of S.R. 56, 0.6 mile north of S.R. 156. Force Construction of Columbus, Indiana was awarded the $6.3 million dollar project for the slide correction and asphalt repair. The roadway is expected to reopen to traffic Sunday, July 1, 2013, weather permitting. During the closure, no through vehicle traffic will be allowed, however local residents will have access to the point of closure.
The need for this project is to repair the landslide in this area of S.R. 56 since it is continuing to move and expand. Landslides have occurred both uphill and downhill on this section of roadway. The existing pavement will be replaced within the limits of the project.
Detour Route:
Southbound S.R. 56 will detour onto westbound S.R. 250 to southbound S.R. 129 to S.R. 56. The detour will end at the S.R. 129/S.R. 56 intersection on the east end of Vevay.
Westbound S.R. 156 or eastbound 56 will detour on S.R. 129 northbound to eastbound S.R. 250 to S.R. 56. The detour will end at the S.R. 250 and S.R. 56 intersection in East Enterprise.
