Tuesday was National Poll Worker Recruitment Day.

INDIANAPOLIS - On National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales is honoring the vital role poll workers play in safeguarding our elections and is encouraging more Hoosiers—especially veterans and the next generation—to step up and serve.

“Poll workers are the backbone of elections. Their service ensures that every eligible Hoosier has the opportunity to cast their ballot with confidence. On this National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, I want to thank those who already serve and call on others to join them. It’s a chance to serve your neighbors, strengthen your community, and ensure our elections run smoothly and securely,” said Diego Morales, Indiana Secretary of State.

Secretary Morales is issuing a call to Indiana’s veterans, whose dedication, discipline, and commitment to service make them natural leaders at the polls. He is also encouraging younger Hoosiers, including high school and college students, to get involved and gain hands-on experience in civic engagement.

Two easy requirements to become a poll worker:

  • You must be a registered voter and a resident of the county in which you wish to work
  • You must be at least 18 years old. Under the Hoosier Hall Pass 16- to 17-year-old students may apply for poll worker positions. Poll workers will receive required training and can earn compensation for Election Day service. Compensation varies depending on county.

Poll workers are tasked with duties such as setting up and preparing the polling location, welcoming voters, verifying voter registrations, and issuing ballots.

Here is more information if you’re interested in becoming a poll worker. National Poll Worker Recruitment Day is sponsored by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.
