INDIANAPOLIS - Secretary of State Diego Morales has announced that the Heritage Foundation has ranked Indiana as #7 in the nation for election integrity.

Since 2023, Indiana has been recognized for making significant improvements in its election integrity score. Since the scorecard's premiere, Indiana has shown a double-digit improvement in its overall score. This historic ranking reflects Secretary Morales’ firm commitment to strengthening elections since taking office in 2023.

“While interviewing for Indiana’s Secretary of State, I made it a commitment to be in the top 10 as I was confident that protecting the integrity of our elections would be a cornerstone of my administration. This national recognition confirms that we are making real, measurable progress to secure the vote and safeguard our election process. This recognition is not the end, it’s fuel for our continued work to keep raising the bar for election integrity in our state. Promises Made. Promises Kept.” said Diego Morales, Indiana Secretary of State.

The Heritage Foundation’s Election Integrity Scorecard evaluates states on key election safeguards such as voter ID requirements, absentee ballot securityballot harvesting restrictions, voter list maintenance, and proof of citizenship requirements. Indiana’s rise into the #7 spot is due to reforms and improvements led by Secretary Morales and supported by the Indiana General Assembly.

Below is a list of main legislative efforts under the Morales administration that contributed to Indiana’s #7 election integrity ranking:

●   Strengthening Indiana’s voter ID laws. (HEA 1334)-2023

●   Increasing Indiana’s ability to do voter list maintenance.  (HEA 1264)-2024

●   Eliminating private and foreign money from Indiana elections. (HEA 1264)-2024

●   Increasing Indiana’s ability to audit our elections. (HEA 1680)-2025

●   Requiring proof of citizenship (HEA 1264 + HEA 1680)-2024, 2025

Secretary Morales likes to extend gratitude to those in the Indiana General Assembly and especially the bill authors who carry this legislation and are strong partners in these efforts.

The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office affirms that their work in election integrity is far from over. Building on this momentum, the office will continue to expand security efforts and ensure that Indiana remains a national leader in secure, transparent elections. Setting a goal to be the #1 state for election integrity. With ongoing collaboration at every level, the goal remains clear: to protect the sanctity of the vote for all Hoosiers – now and for generations to come.
