Image via Franklin County Community School Corporation. (Brookville, Ind.) - Brookville Middle School will soon become Franklin County Middle School. The name change was approved in a unanimous vote by the Franklin County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees on February 13. Earlier this year, the school board voted to consolidate 7th and 8th grade students at each of the county’s three middle schools to be under one roof at the Brookville Middle School starting in the 2017-2018 school year. Declining enrollment, particularly at Laurel and Mt. Carmel schools, was cited as the reason for the consolidation. The Brookville Middle School Greyhounds mascot will be shelved in favor of becoming the Franklin County Middle School Wildcats. The Wildcats is also the mascot at neighboring Franklin County High School. Likewise, FCHS’ navy blue, Columbia blue, and silver color scheme will be put to use at the renamed middle school. Board members also approved of FCMS’ mission statement: “Building a strong community of college and career ready students.” The vision statement will be “All students will embrace learning, excel academically, and own their own futures.” Students will get to vote on a new school logo. Students participating in the Graphic Arts Class at the Whitewater Career Center were asked to design a logo for Franklin County Middle School. The logo was to incorporate a triangle representing the three schools coming together, the school colors, and the school mascot.  The Teacher Transition Team has narrowed the field to a set of finalists (see above), which will be voted on by current 6th and 7th grade students. The FCCSC administration also cited variations in course and program offerings at the three separate middle schools as a good reason for consolidation. The school district has announced course offerings for the first academic year at Franklin County Middle School. The list can be found at https://www.fccsc.k12.in.us/fccsc/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/7th-and-8th-Grade-Course-Offerings.pdf. An open house an information night at the future Franklin County Middle School will be held on Wednesday, March 1 starting at 6:00 p.m. An informational meeting will start in the school gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. Principal Chris Bundy and his staff will discuss course offerings and extra-curricular opportunities.
