INDIANAPOLIS - On Tuesday, State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) gathered with fellow legislators at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the ceremonial start of the 123rd Indiana General Assembly.

Organization Day includes the swearing in of new and returning members of the General Assembly. One Democrat and four Republican new members will be sworn in, so the Indiana Senate will be comprised of 10 Democrat and 40 Republican members during the 2023 legislative session.

This day also marks the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers and gives each Senate and House of Representatives caucus the opportunity to organize in preparation for the upcoming session.

During the first session of each General Assembly, lawmakers craft a comprehensive budget to fund government services for the next two fiscal years.

"During the interim, I heard from many constituents and leaders in the agriculture and energy communities through the 21st Century Energy Policy Development Task ForceState Fair Advisory Committee and Rural Caucus," Leising said. "I am eager to be back in the Statehouse to address the public health, energy, education and agriculture issues residents in rural communities and our state face."

As the 2023 session begins, Leising encourages residents of Senate District 42 to contact her with any questions or comments they may have by email at Senator.Leising@iga.in.gov or by phone at 800-382-9467.
