(Covington, Ky.) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 Office announces emergency maintenance repairs on portions of Interstate 71 in Carroll and Gallatin counties beginning Monday, June 19 through October.

Crews will be addressing base failures, followed by milling and resurfacing portions of the interstate in the project area. This work will require overnight single lane closures on I-71 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Crews may be required to close exit ramps in the project area. KYTC will advise when ramp closures are necessary.

All lanes will remain open, in both directions, during daytime hours. Crews will be working on the project nightly Sunday through Thursday.

This project will be conducted in phases:

Phase 1: Trimble/Carroll County line (38.82 mile point) to north of the Carrollton exit (44.97 mile point). Crews will work on the right southbound lane first. Then, crews will switch to the right northbound lane in the project area beginning at the Trimble/Carroll County line. This process will continue by addressing the left southbound lane, followed by the left northbound lane.

Weather permitting, this phase is expected to be completed by late July.

Phase 2: north of the Carrollton exit (44.54 mile point) to the 59.86 mile point—about two miles north of the Sparta/Warsaw exit.

Beginning late July, weather permitting, crews will begin on the right northbound lane in the project area. Once completed, crews will switch over to the right southbound lane. The process will then repeat on the left lane northbound, followed by the left lane southbound.

This phase is expected to be completed mid/late August.

Phase 3: addressing surface level milling and patching in the project area. KYTC will advise motorists of any upcoming lane closures once this phase is scheduled.

No work will be performed during the Fourth of July holiday weekend from Saturday, July 1 through Wednesday, July 5. All lanes will remain open during that time.

Motorists should slow down, and pay attention when driving near the work zone. While work is being performed overnight, minor delays are still possible. Message boards will be in place ahead of the work zone.

This $3,958,757 emergency project was awarded to Hinkle Contracting, with a target completion date of October 2023.
