(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Millions of Americans will pause to remember the nearly 3,000 civilians and first responders who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Tuesday marks the 17th anniversary of the attacks by members of the terrorist group al-Qaeda. Fresh in many minds are the images of jets flying into the World Trade Center skyscrapers in New York City, the aftermath of a similar attack at the Pentagon, and the crash site of Flight 93 in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The impact was certainly felt locally. Among the victims of the attack at the Pentagon was Milan, Indiana native Army Col. Canfield “Buddy” Boone. The 31-year Army National Guard member is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb is directing flags at state facilities across Indiana to be flown at half-staff Tuesday in honor of Patriot Day. Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset.

There are local events happening to mark the 9/11 anniversary. At Tuesday’s South Dearborn High School boys soccer and girls volleyball games, students will honor firefighters, police officers, and other first responders. Any local first responders wishing to participate should be at the school soccer field by 5:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati Christian University will hold its annual Beyond the Call ceremony. Each year, the event bestows awards on police and firefighters who exceed expectations in their duty to protect and serve their communities.
