Concerned Citizen(s) Help Elderly Lady Who Overturned Vehicle On SR 350

The accident happened Saturday afternoon near Sparta Pike.

(Moores Hill, Ind.) - Heroes don't always wear capes.

Virginia Waldon, 85, wasn't too far from her home when she crashed her vehicle this past Saturday around 4:56 p.m. on State Road 350 near Sparta Pike.

Her vehicle had ran off the road and struck a guardrail before overturning in a ditch.

Dearborn County Sheriff's deputies, Moores Hill Fire and EMS would respond to the call, but the first people on the scene were concerned citizens. One of those concerned citizens was Klark Klayman, of Moores Hill, who was on his way home.

Klayman tells Eagle Country 99.3 that people were on the scene for about five or six minutes trying to figure out how to get Waldon out of her vehicle.

"I was probably the third vehicle on the scene," said Klayman. "Apparently, someone couldn’t get the door open to her vehicle, so they were trying to go in through her passenger seat which the dashboard and everything was caved in. She was in a pretty bad place."

Klayman jumped into action and tried to open the back door on the driver’s side. Then he tried the front door and it opened about two inches. However, a hill was blocking the door from opening all the way.

“I had to pull the door to the point that the door actually bent about eight to 10 inches like from the window down," said Klayman. "I was able to get to her and hold her up. Another person actually was fortunate enough to have a pocket-knife on him at the time and was able to cut the seatbelt while I was holding her upside down.”

Cutting her loose took all of 30 to 45 seconds, according to Klayman.

“I was pretty calm until after," said Klayman. "I had so much adrenaline going I could only hardly contain myself once I got home.”

Some people kept on driving after the crash. Klayman, who knew his wife’s grandmother lives in the area, decided to stop in the case it was her or one of her friends that was injured.

Klayman added that if the people in front of the crash didn’t turn around, get out of their vehicles and signal for help, “nobody would have probably seen her.”

Waldron was airlifted to UC Medical Center. The extent of her injuries was not released.
