Brookville Woman Killed in Accident While Trying to Remove Tree from Roadway

The accident took place Tuesday night in northern Ripley County.

(Ripley County, Ind.) - Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Ripley County. 

Troopers responded to the accident on St. Mary's Road near County Road 1500 North in northern Ripley County on Tuesday night around 10:00.

The initial investigation shows that a Brookville woman was struck and killed while trying to remove a tree from the roadway. According to ISP, two occupants of one vehicle, Timothy Back and Ann Back, were standing outside of their vehicle attempting to remove the tree along with the driver of a second vehicle. 

At that time, a third vehicle being driven by Ryan Giltner, 28, of Brookville, was traveling northbound on St. Mary's Road when his vehicle struck the tree in the roadway. Timothy and Ann Back were both struck in the collision. 

Ann Back sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Giltner and Timothy Back were treated for minor injuries. 

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors although toxicology tests are pending.
