(Versailles, Ind.) – The South Ripley Community School Corporation is continuing to mourn the loss of Brad Bryant.

Bryant passed away last Friday at the age of 50 after a battle with brain cancer.

The Greensburg-native spent 25 years as an English teach at Decatur County Community Schools before joining South Ripley Schools, where he spent the last three years as a guidance counselor.

His wife, Amy, is a fellow educator that teaches at South Ripley Junior High.

When students at South Ripley Junior High learned of Mr. Bryant’s passing, 7th and 8th grader started a Penny War to assist Mrs. Bryant.

The students raised over $4,000.

The Friendship State Bank has shown their support by counting the coins each day and providing a matching donation bringing the total to $8,100 to give to the Bryant family.

This has been such a touching experience for all of us here at SRJH, a real light in the dark times we seem to be surrounded by. This community has proven that kindness and compassion are still alive. Here at South Ripley - we are a family. We support one another and are always there for each other. This community is that way too - and this Penny War has exceeded any of our expectations. This is something that our students will remember forever,” said Ashlee Miller, guidance counselor at SRJH.

Memorial contributions may be made through Bass & Gasper Funeral home to Decatur County School Corporation, South Ripley Community Schools or Aspen Health Campus.
