Boone Co. Maybe Getting Five Reps.

A map showing proposed redrawn legislative

district lines in northern Kentucky.

(Frankfort, Ky.) - Boone County could be getting a larger voice in the Kentucky legislature if a redistricting proposal passes the state legislature.

Every ten years, state lawmakers are required to redraw legislative district lines based on new U.S. Census data.

The redistricting bill, House Bill 1, passed a House committee Wednesday, with a vote before the entire House to be held Thursday.

Boone County’s population has grown by more than 30 percent over the past decade according to the 2010 Census.

The county currently has three representatives in Districts 60, 66, and 69. The elected representatives in each of those districts are Sal Santoro (R-Florence), Addia Wuchner (R-Florence), and Adam Koenig (R-Erlanger).

Under a plan approved by a House panel Wednesday, Boone would gain two new districts. Rep. Rick Rand’s (D-Bedford) District 43 would expand into southern Boone County. Rep. Alecia Webb-Edington’s (R-Fort Wright) District 63 would expand from Kenton County into northeastern Boone County.

The redrawn lines do not pit any incumbent representatives against one another in 2012.

If the redistricting plan as it is now goes through, Boone County would be represented by five of the state’s 100 representatives.

The redistricting proposal does not contain any changes to Ketnucky’s state Senate districts.
