Boone Co. Animal Shelter Goes "No Kill" Tues.

Press release from the Boone County Animal Shelter

(Burlington, Ky.) - June 11 is more than just a summer day. It is a day that companion animals in shelters across the nation will have a special chance at a loving and forever home. Each day in U.S. shelters, over 10,000 companion animals are needlessly euthanized. But June 11 will be different.

On June 11, shelters across the U.S. are taking the “Just One Day” pledge to not euthanize any savable animals and to instead focus on animal adoptions, marketing and promotions, community outreach and more, to send companion animals home with loving families. The event is organized and supported by the No Kill Nation, a national advocacy organization dedicated to ending the systematic killing of healthy and treatable animals in U.S. shelters.

The Boone County Animal Shelter in Burlington has taken the nationwide pledge to not kill any savable animals on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. To celebrate the pledge, adoption fees for spayed or neutered dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be waived on June 11. Adoption fees typically range from $90 to $120, and all animals will be either spayed or neutered, have had their rabies shot (if not, adopters will receive a rabies voucher), micro-chipped and up to date on initial vaccinations.

“This is a perfect opportunity to reach out and adopt an animal and support our shelter's commitment to saving more lives,” says Shelter Director Beckey Reiter. “We are asking the community to help make the shelter a bit emptier at the end of the day on June 11 and give all of our community's homeless animals get a second chance at a loving home.”

The Boone County Animal Shelter will be open on June 11 from 12 noon to 6:00 p.m. and is located at 5643 Idlewild Road in Burlington.

The event will also include information about volunteering at the shelter and fostering for the shelter, as well as resources and information on spay/neuter services in the area, all crucial components of the shelter’s mission to end euthanasia.
