(Batesville, Ind.) - Something exciting is taking shape in Batesville, and it is much bigger than a new building. Under the direction of Batesville Memorial Public Library Director, Kim Porter, the Arts & Innovation Hub is “the next right step” to meet Batesville’s needs. The plans for the Hub began in 2021 and construction began in the summer of 2025.

The new Arts and Innovation Hub, part of the Batesville Memorial Public Library’s expansion, promises to be a place where creativity and technology come together. Remember the excitement of a kindergarten classroom when everyone was handed a brand new box of crayons, a stack of construction paper, a little scissors and a bottle of glue? This project feels like a natural next step—one that opens the door for students, artists, entrepreneurs, families, and curious minds of all ages to try something new.

A Place Built for Creativity

The 8,300-square-foot Hub has been described as a space built for creativity, education, and entrepreneurship, and that description feels right on target. The facility include a makerspace with tools such as 3D printers, a laser engraver, and a vinyl printer/cutter, along with a recording studio, sewing rooms, meeting rooms, study areas, and flexible event space for up to 200 people. A makerspace is a hands-on creative workspace where people can use shared tools and technology to design, build, print, record, and experiment without having to buy expensive equipment on their own. That means someone with a good idea can try it out, learn new skills, and create something useful without breaking the bank.

There are people at the Hub who will instruct you on how to use the machines. There are indoor meeting rooms and outdoor gathering areas that encourage the community to sit and share ideas and conversations.

Where Ideas Come to Life

What makes the story especially fun is imagining how people will use it. A small business owner can create and personalize a banner, window sign, or promotional materials without paying the full cost by doing part of the work themselves. Home-based businesses can make professional looking table stands and banners. Schools and community groups can print invitations, make decorations for special events, or design lapel pins to show support for a cause. A booth at a festival might even feature recorded music or custom messages made right in the Hub’s recording studio.

And the 3D printer opens up even more possibilities, from prototypes for a class project to display pieces, replacement parts and one-of-a-kind creations. The Hub is about giving people the confidence to explore their ideas and turn them into something real on the latest, cutting edge equipment.

The vinyl printer/cutter always brings wide-eyed wonder. One home business operator watched her 6 foot long banner emerge from the printer like a very slow magic trick. Every few inches she said, "Wow, I made that," followed immediately by, "Wow, that's a lot bigger than I expected!"

The work sessions can only be reserved for a limited number of hours each time because some people won’t know when to stop! People can make audio recordings in the easy-to-use recording booth. Whether it's recording a song, playing a musical instrument, creating a commercial, or recording a podcast, the equipment at the Hub makes creating audio tracks simple and fun. Just bring your voice, your instrument and a headset.

A Hub for the Whole Community

Library leaders and community supporters have emphasized that the Hub is meant to serve a wide range of users. St. Louis Catholic School is excited for the possibilities the new Hub presents for their students and the greater community. The Arts Council welcomes a place for original and arts-based programming as well as providing a home for local artists to share their work. Oldenburg Academy is particularly excited about the potential for the project to inspire lifelong learning. That broad vision is what makes the project so exciting. Connection and growth, while having fun, is what the Hub is all about.

A Bright Future for Batesville

There is also something inspiring about what this project says about Batesville itself. With support that includes a $2 million READI grant and strong local backing, the community has chosen to invest not only in bricks and mortar, but in imagination. The Arts and Innovation Hub signals that Batesville is thinking ahead - about lifelong learning, about helping new ideas grow, and about creating a place where people can gather to make, share, and discover. The newest chapter of the library will not simply be about checking out books. It will be about checking out possibilities, and that is a story worth celebrating.
