Cynthia Scroggin.
(Jennings County, Ind.) - Deputies with the Jennings County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a report of shots fired at a residence on County Road 555 East in Butlerville.
The incident took place on October 17 around 6:05 p.m.
According to a news release, deputies spoke with a male subject who reported, Cynthia Scroggin, 61, of Butlerville, was extremely intoxicated and had shot at him with a handgun. The male reported that Scroggin pointed the firearm at his head and pulled the trigger, but the firearm’s safety was engaged. He further stated that he attempted to flee, at which time Scroggin fired a shot at him.
Deputies responded to the residence and learned that Scroggin was inside a camper on the property and refusing to come out. A trained crisis negotiator made contact with Scroggin and was able to persuade her to exit the camper peacefully after approximately 40 minutes.
After exiting, Scroggin, who deputies say appeared highly intoxicated, allegedly became combative with deputies. Due to her level of intoxication and concerns for her safety, she was transported to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital for evaluation. While at the hospital, Scroggin allegedly threatened to kill deputies.
During the investigation, a spent shell casing believed to be associated with the incident was located.
After being medically cleared by hospital staff, Scroggin was transported to the Jennings County Jail, where she is being held on the following preliminary charges:
- Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon — Level 5 Felony
- Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon — Level 5 Felony
- Pointing a Firearm — Level 5 Felony
- Intimidation — Level 6 Felony
- Resisting Law Enforcement — Class A Misdemeanor
